komatsu transmission oil

Thanks for joining us and I hope you enjoy your stay!! Welcome to HeavyEquipmentForums. Komatsu drive train fluid suggestions? Spent quite a bit of time today getting to know my dozer. Checked most of the fluid levels. Hydraulic fluid was high, engine oil too high yes we're parked level and drive train fluid was at the add mark. Any ideas what commonly available tranny fluid meets the spec?

I've checked transmission oil and it's in max-line, even little bit over it. Oil is quite dark and I don't know when it's last time changed. Any suggestions? Can it be torque converter, clutches or worn oil pump?

I have to test gearbox pressures but I don't know right ports or pressures. Thanks for any help! Post a Reply Report this post. Showing items 1 - 15 of 31 results. You check the strainer first. The strainer is situating in the inlet port of oil pump in transmission box.

Komatsu D31S basic tranny questions I've had it for 2 months and only get to mess with it a few hours a week right now so its taking me awhile to learn all the the stuff on it. Its a 78 model with power shift tranny. I keep saying I'll get the manuals next week. Anyway, on my Ford tractor the hydrolic fluid and tranny fluid are the same with the same resivour.

I discovered yesterday that on the D31S its different I think.

Below are pics of 2 dip stick tubes in front of the seat. They are very close together and one stick is flat and the other stick is round. I'm wondering if one is tranny fluid and the other final drive fluid. The hydrolic fluid is under the right arm rest. The plunger on the left right side of D31 is all the way in for reverse and out for forward or maybe vis versa. The one on the right is the gear plunger and selects 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear.

I'm not sure which speed I'm missing but if I had to guess it would be 2nd. Any ideas on how to proceed with investigating the missing gear issue. If I remove the lever that controls the gear plunger will it pop out? I can't see that it holds anything but to tighten it I had to remove the lock washer. I might try a slightly longer bolt but I'm curious if it will cause an interference problem inside the tranny. Re: Komatsu D31S basic tranny questions Great info. Thanks a ton, well actually about 7 tons.

Recently snagged a D31A at a local auction. Sadly I got it home and was only able to push over a few stumps before the transmission lost all movement forward and reverse.

Thanks to the guys here I was able to see the problem was most likely the strainer plugged so I dumped the fluid and removed strainer and it was just absolutely full of metal. Lots of metal sludge in the bottom of trans, didn't look like it had even been cleaned out and didnt appear to be fresh. I cleaned it all out and thoroughly cleaned strainer. Once refilled with the proper oil to the proper level I was only able to operate the dozer again for about 2 minutes and then lost all movement again with the same cavitating pump sound.

I dumped the oil again and it was back completely full of metal this time fresh looking along with plugging the strainer again. Oil looked like paint.

I again cleaned the strainer and refilled the oil in an attempt to get the dozer to make it to my trailer so I didn't have to work on it where it was. Of course it died completely in forward speeds with a thunk right here: So my only option is to remove the transmission where the dozer lays, typical. I still had reverse so I was able to get it back up on some lumber to give me some more room to work.
